Reconsidering the Disinformation Dilemma

The disinformation problem is a symptom of and a contributor to our fractured politics. The ubiquity of social media and the decline of local news organizations are major factors. It can seem like an unsolvable problem, like a game of disinformation whack-a-mole. But could we start to break through all this noise by shifting the focus from fighting the bad stuff to elevating quality information? And if so, where do we begin?

Janet Coats

Janet Coats is the Managing Director of the Consortium on Trust in Media and Technology at UF’s College of Journalism and Communications. CTMT focuses on understanding the dynamics that have undermined trust in news and ways that technology can serve as a trust-builder. Before joining UF, she served as Executive Director for Innovation and Strategy at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. Prior to her work in higher education, Coats was executive editor of The Tampa Tribune from 2004 until 2009 and executive editor of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune prior to that. A native Tennessean, she’s been in Floridian for nearly 30 years and considers it to be her home for life.
