“Dolly Parton: Crisis Communication CEO” describes three crisis response theories, including the emerging discourse of renewal theory. The presentation highlights how Dolly Parton’s celebrity and associations with the Appalachian Mountains allowed her to step in as the region’s de facto “CEO” following the devastating wildfires around Great Smoky Mountain National Park, as well as then cities of Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, Tenn. The presentation includes video clips of Ms. Parton’s public remarks and detailing her philanthropic efforts on the area’s behalf.

Presented by Lance Kinney, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Fellow, Alabama Program in Sports Communication at the University of Alabama, Dr. Kinney has been teaching media planning, strategy and research since 1991. He has a BA in communication from Auburn University. Following his first ad agency account executive job, he earned an MA in advertising from the University of Georgia. After stints as a communications coordinator with a client firm and account executive with a J. Walter Thompson subsidiary, Dr. Kinney earned a doctorate in mass communication theory and research from Florida State University. Dr. Kinney pursues a program of integrated marketing communication strategy research, event sponsorship and mass media effects.
