The Capital Chapter invites you on an exciting Pro-X opportunity – Big Bang Theory Style! Join us for a behind the scenes tour of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, the largest and highest-powered magnet laboratory in the world.

The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory is the only facility of its kind in the United States (and the entire Western Hemisphere). The Lab brings more than 1,300 scientists from around the world to do research on its magnets. The facility is comprised of three sites – Tallahassee. Gainesville and Los Alamos – with headquarters located in right here in Tallahassee’s Innovation Park — truly the home to scientific innovation in this area. But the lab doesn’t just use powerful magnets to answer scientific questions, it also has engineers who actually build these world record magnets! The Guinness World Record 45 tesla hybrid magnet was built with Florida Bitter magnet technology that was invented right here in Tallahassee.

Our personalized tour, led by one of our own CapChap members, will include a general overview of the Magnet Lab and the research conducted here as well as explanations of the different types of magnets used here, including resistive magnets, superconducting magnets, pulsed magnets and our world-record hybrid magnet.

All visitors touring the lab are required by its safety policy to wear close-toed shoes. No flip-flops or sandals, please.
