What inspired you to pursue a career in public relations?

I enjoy reaching out to different groups and communicating with them in ways in which motivate them to action.

What project are you most proud of?

My Veterans Outreach Project. My department developed a program to help make housing more affordable for disabled veterans. This program teaches how to reduce mortgage payments by utilizing tax exemptions for veterans.

What is one piece of advice you would give others entering the field?

Be flexible. The ability to adapt to changing circumstances is extremely important.

Valencia L. Scott
Deputy Director of Community Affairs
Leon County Property Appraiser’s Office
Hometown: Miami, Florida

What inspired you to pursue a career in public relations?

My passion for helping others through sharing information or by enlightening someone on a particular issue or topic that they may not be aware of or informed about inspired me to explore a career in public relations. I believe it’s important to be informed and if I can share information, which makes me feel that I’ve provided a beneficial service.

What do you think is the biggest challenge PR professionals will face going forward?

The public’s perception of what public relations is; what it means and how valuable PR professionals can be for your organizations reputation or bottom line.

What would your colleagues be surprised to know about you?

I love karaoke! I have my own karaoke sessions at home and in the car all the time. I once had a random “Lip Sync Battle” at a local gas station with a complete stranger, of course I won! It was one of the funniest things that has ever happened to me.
