From Newsroom to Public Service: How Desiree Carver Uses Storytelling to Make a Difference

Originally from Douglas, Georgia, and a Tallahassee resident since 2021, Desiree brings more than a decade of experience in journalism, digital media, and communications. An award-winning journalist, she has worked across newspapers, radio, television, and digital platforms, building expertise in storytelling, audience engagement, and strategic communications. Today, she serves as Director of Communications for the Florida Commission on Offender Review, where she supports the agency’s mission of ensuring public safety and providing victim assistance through the post-prison release process.
We asked Desiree how she stays inspired and connected in the communications field.
Why FPRA?
“I joined FPRA to become more involved in the Tallahassee community and expand my professional network. What I’ve loved most so far is how welcoming everyone is.”
What advice would you give to someone starting in communications?
“Be confident and have thick skin! Early in my career, I learned how to separate my emotions from constructive criticism. At the same time, it’s important to know when to speak up for yourself.”
What inspires you most about your work?
“Writing has always inspired me. As a child, I discovered a love for creative writing, and it’s a passion I continue to pursue today. Being able to incorporate creativity into my career has been amazing, and I love that my job allows me to fully be myself.”

Desiree’s communications career began at the Valdosta Daily Times as a beat reporter. During her time there, she covered a variety of beats and advanced to Lifestyles Editor and later Digital Editor. She also co-created a lifestyles insert and co-hosted a podcast. Her career later expanded into radio and television, where she focused on digital news operations, managing digital teams, overseeing multiple websites, leading news streaming efforts across major platforms, and growing social media audiences.
After transitioning from the news industry, she continued pursuing her passion for writing and community impact through public service. In her current role with the Florida Commission on Offender Review, she applies her expertise in communications, digital strategy, and storytelling to support the agency’s important work.
