The primary duties of this position involve media relations and assisting the Communications unit with the day-to-day administrative operation. The workload of this position is consistently heavy and the pace is fast. This person needs to be able to work well under pressure and deadlines.

Assist news media representatives both in person and on the phone with a variety of inquiries and information on issues currently in the news. Research and develop appropriate information to disseminate to members of the media, players, retailers and the general public.

Provide assistance to the Communications Director as necessary.

Maintain filing system of media information, including new-clip library, editorial files and related material, correspondence, media contact information and call log, photos, and photo authorization files.

Prepare various correspondences and maintain and update log, filing system and routing system for prepared correspondence from the Governor’s Office and the Office of the Secretary.

Write Lottery news releases, advisories, correspondence, reports and other informational documents to inform the public and media about Lottery operations and games.

Proficient in AP style of writing.

Ability to select and provide appropriate, accurate and timely information to others.

Knowledge of rules of grammar and punctuation.

Demonstrates strong interpersonal, problem-solving and communication skills.

Ability to respond to customers, both internal and external, in a tactful and courteous manner.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, bother verbally and written, and to project a positive attitude, enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

Detail oriented, with the ability to recognize, diagnose and resolve issues.

Ability to quickly learn new concepts and procedures.

Ability to work independently while managing multiple tasks and deadlines, and knowledge of how to prioritize them.

Proficient in Microsoft Office, primarily Word, Excel and Outlook, as well as Internet navigation.

Ability to speak and write fluent Spanish a plus, though not required.


Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in communications, English, public relations, advertising, marketing, or a closely related field of study.

Professional or nonprofessional experience in communications, public information, marketing, advertising, or journalism may substitute on a year for year basis for the required college education.
