About the Animal Shelter Foundation
The Animal Shelter Foundation (ASF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Tallahassee, Florida, dedicated to improving the quality of lives of homeless animals in the care of Tallahassee Animal Services, and helping to reduce pet overpopulation through education and ASF’s affordable spay and neuter clinic, Tally Spay. ASF has operated for 18 years as an all volunteer-led organization and is now seeking its first Executive Director to lead the organization into its next chapter of impact and sustainability.
Position Summary
ASF seeks an experienced, hands-on Executive Director (ED) to lead the organization with a primary focus on fundraising, donor relations, and strategic growth. This inaugural role offers an extraordinary opportunity to help shape the future of a mission-driven organization with deep community roots and a passionate base of supporters.
The Executive Director will serve as the primary executive and fundraiser, working in partnership with the Board of Directors to build organizational capacity, diversify revenue, and expand ASF’s impact..
Key Responsibilities
- Fundraising & Development (60%)
- Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive fundraising strategy to grow annual revenue through individual giving, major gifts, grants, sponsorships, and planned giving.
- Cultivate and steward donor relationships with a focus on long-term engagement and increased giving.
- Oversee donor communications and campaigns
- Provide support for signature fundraising events
- Research and write grant proposals and manage reporting requirements.
Organizational Leadership & Strategic Planning (20%)
- Serve as a collaborative partner to the Board of Directors in implementing ASF’s strategic plan, transitioning the Board from a fully working board to one that is staff supported for our programs and administrative work.
- Provide day-to-day oversight of programs, finances, and operations, with the support of board committees and volunteers.
- Ensure strong stewardship of donor funds and fiscal responsibility in alignment with ASF’s mission.
Partnerships & Community Engagement (15%)
- Alongside Board members, act as the public face of ASF, strengthening relationships with city officials, community partners, media, and supporters.
- Collaborate closely with Tallahassee Animal Services, as directed
- Champion public education and awareness efforts to reduce pet overpopulation and promote responsible pet ownership.
Marketing & Communications (5%)
- Oversee marketing and communications strategies that build awareness, support donor cultivation, and increase visibility of ASF programs and impact.
- Serve as one of the spokespeople and representatives for ASF in public forums and media.
Compensation
ASF offers a competitive salary ($75,000-$90,000) commensurate with experience, plus a flexible work environment and the opportunity to lead a growing organization making a meaningful difference in the lives of animals in our community.

Qualifications
- Minimum 5–7 years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, or a related field.
- Proven success in fundraising and donor cultivation, including securing major gifts and/or grants.
- Passion for animal welfare and belief in ASF’s mission.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to execute hands-on in a lean organizational environment.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience working with or reporting to a nonprofit board of directors.
- Comfort representing the organization publicly and working in diverse community settings.
- Proficiency with donor databases, CRM systems, and digital communication tools is a plus.
