Description
The Deputy Director of Communications (Press Secretary) for the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation has the following duties and responsibilites:
Serve as agency spokesperson as assigned by Communications Director. Manage direct reports assigned to assist in this effort. Perform all required tasks related to the supervision of employees, including approval of attendance and leave, evaluation of employee performance (preparing performance plans, performance evaluations, position descriptions, etc.), recruitment and selection, employee development and other supervisory related duties.
Assist in the development of public relations strategy. Proactively search for media opportunities and coordinate agency publicity activities.
Manage internal communications, including editing and securing approval for all content prior to posting. Produce the weekly newsletters from the Secretary’s Office and the biweekly internal newsletter.
Provide assistance in creating and sending reports as necessary to the Governor’s Office.
Manage department external affairs and outreach initiatives as necessary, specifically coordinating events for the Secretary, as well as writing speeches.
Manage overall media relations activities for the Office of Communications in tracking and responding to media inquiries each day.
Maintain department intranet and internet sites and update with timely information, including Secretary’s Office information. Update the department’s social media accounts as necessary.
Handle public records requests from members of the media and submit responses to the Communications Director for approval before disseminating.
Develop internal communication programs to assist the department in its communications goals with employees.
Assist the Communications Director with media training for key department employees as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Eligible applicants should possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations or related field; at least one year experience speaking on-the-record with reporters; knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective communication and ability to communicate effectively; ability to prepare correspondence and reports; ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures; ability to work independently to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments and solve problems; knowledge of computer software including applications used by the Office of Public Information.
