Description

This is a highly responsible position that serves as the department’s spokesperson and assists the Communications Director in all departmental communications functions, including media relations, social media strategy, marketing, web content development, stakeholder engagement, and video/graphic production. Duties include, but may not be limited to:

Serves as DBPR spokesperson and primary point of contact for media relations.

Responds to inquiries and issues from elected officials, the media, the public, and other government agencies.

Assists the Communications Director in generating earned media through the writing and development of press releases, proclamations, social media campaigns, articles, newsletters, and other external deliverables.

Monitors daily media coverage and other published content related to the Department, its programs, and its personnel. Facilitates appropriate internal communication to advise on matters of interest featured in these publications.

Identifies media opportunities and strategies to proactively communicate the department’s mission and provides information to the public, licensees, and stakeholders.

Writes, edits and publishes news releases and articles for internal and external publication.

Writes speeches, messages, talking points, and responses for the Secretary of the department and other members of the executive leadership team.

Assists in managing messaging and strategy on department social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Identifies and supports opportunities to build and maintain relationships with department licensees and stakeholders, law makers, related organizations and associations, media entities, and others to assist in the promotion of agency programs, services, and initiatives.

Develops strategic and targeted messaging to be used in internal and external communications to tell the department’s story to the public, media, licensees, stakeholders, and staff, ensuring these audiences are updated on major DBPR projects, initiatives, partnerships, and educational campaigns.

Assists with fulfilling public records requests from members of the media, including coordinating with appropriate program areas and offices.

Manages strategic internal communications initiatives to ensure employees of the department are engaged in departmental efforts and activities. Strategizes opportunities for executive leadership and division directors to interact with members of the department to help create a cohesive and collaborative culture.

Creates multimedia scripts for internal and external communications initiatives.

Collaborates with the Bureau of Human Resources and Office of the Secretary to draft, review, plan, and disseminate internal correspondence to employees.

Assists with the planning, production, editing, and dissemination of videos, photographs, reports, and other publications on behalf of the department, the Secretary, or executive leadership.

Supports planning, coordinating, and staffing special events for the Secretary or executive leadership.

Manages internal and external web pages and department-managed sites.

Aligns communications goals and plans with Governor, Secretary, and department priorities, initiatives, missions, and values.

Assists the Communications Director in managing the Communications Office and staff. Keeps the Communications Director, Chief of Staff, Deputy Secretaries, and Secretary informed regarding strategic media opportunities or emerging issues.

Qualifications

>Knowledgeable of journalistic writing style and the concepts of grammar, punctuation and associated press style.

>Knowledgeable and skilled in Microsoft word, excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

>Knowledge of the principles and techniques of media relations, public relations, editing, and marketing.

>Skilled in in taking technical information and translating into plain language that the public can understand.

>Ability to research and write news releases and reports and newsletters for the general public’s understanding.

>Skilled in strong written and verbal communication.

>Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

>Proficient in social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, TikTok, and YouTube, and knowledgeable of best practices.

>Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite.

>Detail oriented, with the ability to recognize, diagnose, and resolve issues at a high level.

>Skilled in dealing with the public in a prompt and courteous manner.

>Ability to organize and manage meetings and special events.

>Ability to quickly learn new concepts and procedures.

>Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and written, and to project a positive attitude, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn.

>Ability to set and manage priorities.

>Ability to remain calm and be effective under pressure.

>Willingness to grow and stay informed of new technologies, marketing trends and best practices.
