Description

Communications Specialist is a full-time, in-person position located in Tallahassee, Florida. The Communications Specialist provides support to the Director of Communications by assisting with routine tasks of the communications office. The class is responsible for writing and editing content for newsletters, press releases, articles, social media content, reports, and other documents produced regularly by the Ounce of Prevention Fund of Florida.

The ideal candidate will have excellent written communication skills, experiencing drafting and proofreading/copy editing all forms of communication, strong interpersonal skills, and excellent organizational and time management skills. They must be able to work both independently and with direction, managing several projects simultaneously with close attention to detail and exceptional creativity, resourcefulness, and problem- solving skills. The Communications Specialist reports directly to the Director of Communications.

The tasks listed below represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Writes and edits content for reports, training materials, press releases, advocacy campaigns and other materials produced regularly by the Ounce of Prevention Fund of Florida.
  • Assists the Director of Communications with updating the content and information on the organization’s websites, social media pages, and any other front- facing platform.
  • Provides periodic training opportunities and technical instruction to fellow employees regarding communications, writing style, grammar, and public relations.
  • Assists with strategy development materials for public awareness campaigns as well as creating content, graphics, and materials.
  • Assists with the strategy, design, and execution of social media campaigns.
  • Schedules social media content on all platforms.
  • Creates content such as blog articles, infographics, flyers, brochures, and videos.
  • Assists the Communications Director with writing and pitching press releases and op-ed articles.
  • Performs social media marketing research and keeps current with social media trends.
  • Collaborates with other Ounce of Prevention Fund of Florida units to support communications workplan and to address any communications-related needs.
  • Supports Ounce of Prevention Fund of Florida operations by managing supply order process, inventory, and purchasing.
  • Manages the ordering, packaging, and shipping of educational materials.
  • Assists with donor communication, including writing thank-you letters, emails, and newsletter articles.
  • Collaborates with team members on special projects and initiatives to provide communications support to fundraising goals.
  • Stays informed about current trends and best practices in fundraising and nonprofit management.
  • Supports the grant writing process by recommending revisions for grammar, clarity, and tone.

Compensation: $35,000 – $40,000

Qualifications

Education/experience requirements:

Requires EITHER:

  • a bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, English, journalism, business, or similar area of study OR
  • at least four years of experience as a social media specialist, communications specialist, or similar role.

Preferred Experience: Experience with graphic design, web design, video production, and media relations preferred.

Special certifications and licenses: Requires Driver’s License.

Technical knowledge and skills requirements: Fluency in Canva, Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel, PowerPoint, and Word), and social media management (especially Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, and YouTube); ability to use online ordering, shipping, and tracking systems; excellent writing, copy editing, and graphic design skills; familiarity with AP Style; excellent critical thinking, interpersonal, communication, time-management, and problem-solving skills; fluency in English and Spanish preferred.

Physical Requirements: Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to 50 pounds of force on an occasional basis, and routine keyboard operations. May require providing instruction/training to others through explanation, demonstration, and supervised practice, making recommendations based on communications expertise. Requires good judgment and regular decision-making affecting the functioning of the Communications Unit and is responsible for bringing work-related questions and concerns to the attention of the Director of Communications.
