Position Purpose

The Communications Specialist II provides general support to the Senior Director of Communications. Additionally, the Communications Specialist II develops targeted online and offline communication materials that support the Foundation’s goals and objectives.

Principal Responsibilities

• Participate in developing, writing and editing campaign communications including proposals, case statements, newsletters, brochures and a variety of campaign collateral materials;
• Write and edit feature stories, impact stories, articles and briefs for various internal and external publications in accordance with accepted stylistic standards;
• Assist Senior Director of Communications and other Foundation staff with writing, editing and proofreading letters, programs, press releases, invitations, Board of Trustees minutes and collateral materials;
• Identify story ideas, conduct interviews and research, and develop impact and feature stories for oneFSU and the Foundation websites;
• Maintain current information and update content as necessary on oneFSU and the Foundation websites;
• Work with College Development Officers to write and edit gift agreements, templates and proposals in accordance with accepted stylistic standards;
• Organize monthly All-Staff meetings, including the drafting of talking points and the gathering of agenda items;
• Take minutes for Board of Trustees meetings, when required;
• Keep abreast of fundraising and communications best practices;
• Protect confidential information;
• Perform other related duties as assigned.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required;
  • Degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations or related field preferred;
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in public relations, journalism, communications or related field;
  • Experience with capital campaign communications preferred;
  • Experience in a university environment preferred;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products;
  • Experience with social media preferred;
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills;
  • Highly organized and detail oriented;
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills to work effectively with a diverse audience of alumni, friends, faculty, staff, students and University community members;
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative and follow-through on issues;
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to balance competing priorities, complex situations and tight deadlines;
  • Willingness to work collaboratively as a member of the Foundation team, participate enthusiastically in the life of the University;
  • Service oriented approach.
