The Work You Will Do:
The Communications Director has the impactful responsibility to serve as a representative of DMS through written and verbal communications with members of the public, media, lawmakers, and various stakeholder groups. The Communications Director is responsible for developing and directing a strategic communications plan that promotes DMS’ mission and initiatives, both internally and externally.
Your Specific Responsibilities:
In addition to managing the daily operations of the Office of Communications, the Communications Director can expect to engage in and perform the following:
Serve as the primary point of contact and key spokesperson on matters involving the media on behalf of DMS. You will develop and maintain professional relationships with members of the public and media and with law makers and various stakeholders. Additionally, you will develop and maintain collaborative relationships with DMS’ program areas to stay informed of new initiatives.
Support DMS leadership through the development of strategies and talking points related to initiatives and challenges.
Coordinate timely and accurate responses to media requests for information and public records requests. Manage press clippings related to DMS initiatives and relay to leadership on a daily basis. Edit all communication materials, including internal and external reports, news releases, social media campaigns and internal newsletters and publications.
Plan special employee recognition events and continuously promote a healthy and productive work environment by coordinating internal communications with DMS employees.
Responsible for the supervision of staff including performance management, planning and directing work, managing schedules including leave requests, fostering a healthy and positive work environment, and working with the Office of Human Resources during hiring and disciplinary actions.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, political science, or a related field.
At least four years of experience in communications or media relations.
Experience managing communications and/or political strategy, planning, or program development.
