The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is seeking an enthusiastic, well organized individual with strong writing skills and excellent customer service to manage communication activities for the Division of Recreation and Parks (DRP) which includes Florida State Parks and leadership for outdoor recreation in Florida. Florida State Parks span the entire state with 175 state parks and trails. The success of the communications program is critical to the overall success of Florida State Parks, the only state park system in the United States to be recognized four times with the gold medal award for excellence in recreation management. The leadership team this individual would join is charged with sharing the success and benefits of the system to various audiences through storytelling which focuses on the Florida State Park’s Mission. “To provide resource-based recreation, while preserving, interpreting and restoring natural and cultural resources.” This is in addition to supporting proactive communication on the division’s role in providing leadership for outdoor recreation in Florida.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for applying professional communications expertise to daily management of proactive and reactive communications activities for the Division of Recreation and Parks (DRP) and working with the DEP Communications Office as part of the agency’s communications team.

One of the many responsibilities of the Communications Coordinator is successfully promoting the achievements and benefits of the system to various audiences by collecting, creating, and developing positive stories for Florida State Parks and outdoor recreation in Florida and provides supervision for division communication staff. This individual is also responsible for working with the agency’s Communications Office to identify appropriate opportunities for matching these stories to appropriate media outlets.

The Communications Coordinator acts as a liaison for Florida State Parks with the agency’s Communications Office to provide content including outreach assistance for communications plans, press releases, calendar announcements and media advisories and inquiries. This individual will coordinate with the agency’s creative services team on brochures, park publications, online park guide, newsletters, presentations and webinars, videos and animated clips, blogs, reports and other information materials and reports. The position is responsible for providing information for agency and partner publications, newsletters, websites and other materials. This individual also coordinates the creation and placement of web content and provides support for social media strategies.

Due to the high-profile nature of this program, this individual must be able to build and maintain positive relationships and provide clear communication throughout special project implementation. This position is expected to serve the needs of parks and program areas throughout the division, and represent the DRP Director’s Office at various meetings, workshops, and conferences to furnish and obtain information. Some travel is required.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• The principles, methods and techniques of successful communication plan development and implementation.
• The use of current media and technology in communications.
• The methods of data collection and analysis.
• The best management practices for fiscally responsible communications purchasing and current fiscal procedures.

• The development and management of agency and division-wide initiatives.
• The development, review, evaluation and production of a variety of integrated communication programs.

Ability to:
• Write, edit and review brochures, publications, newsletters, blogs, presentations and webinars, videos and animated clips, web and social media content, and other agency, partner and public information materials.

• Utilize problem solving techniques and apply critical thinking skills.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally.
• Understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
