Description

The AARP Associate State Director for Communications is a frontline voice and presence with the 50+ public, AARP members and volunteers, targeted audiences including multicultural audiences, stakeholders and partners.

In this role you will develop and implement AARP integrated communications strategies; perform communications functions including basic promotion of AARP and AARP’s brand, news releases, media advisories, assistance with advocacy campaigns and community presence and multicultural activities, social media and newsletter coordination; work with national office staff to promote AARP’s strategic issues and priorities, programs, and activities, and to position AARP with the media in the state; develop and manage a robust, timely and relevant online and social media presence; train, coach and assist team members and designated volunteers to strengthen and grow their expertise and use of social media; maximize reciprocal relationships with multicultural/diverse organizations; orient, train and support volunteers on communication messages and strategies for priority issues and communications processes in accordance with AARP National and State goals.

Qualifications

Requires Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, or a related discipline and 5-7 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience related to the duties of the position. Demonstrates a strong understanding of media relations, communications, and public relations. Bilingual skills may be required for specific assignments based on the needs of the membership segment supported. Travel required at least 50% of work time.
