Under the direction of the Associate Director of Communications and Chief Communications Officer, the manager:
Identifies and nurtures strategic partnerships with key media organizations/journalists, consortia and other influencers; Ensures the University’s strategic goals and priorities are incorporated into media and related-external messaging and engagement; Supervises the Multimedia Producer, Digital Marketing/Media Specialist, Visual Communications Specialist and positions within Media Relations; Works with internal units/external agencies (media, public relations, etc.) to conceive, develop, pitch and present stories; Provides education, training and insight related to public relations to University-wide Communicators Network, University leadership and stakeholders; Manages interviews and expert media placement opportunities; Oversees production of news media coverage, along with analysis, social, paid and earned media strategies and execution of media campaigns; Captures visual/audio elements; Works with vendors to produce high-quality productions); Writes and disseminates news releases, media alerts, articles; Organizes news conferences and media briefings; and serves as media contact or identifies media contacts for inbound inquiries (except where directed by the Chief Communications Officer or President).
Maintains University’s list of professors and topics of expertise; Oversees media monitoring and notification of the President’s Leadership Team/key internal stakeholders of time-sensitive issues, events or coverage; Writes/produces additional communications as needed for University print, broadcast and online publications, events, speeches, etc.; Edits elements for style, substance, grammar, format and organization; Maintains University’s brand standards and style guidelines; Manages Media Relations’ budget and oversees (i.e., A&M magazine/FAMUNews.com/social media; e-newsletter (FAMU Forward)), etc.; Initiates/oversees professional development program for interns/work study students; Serves on select University committees assigned by Chief Communications Officer to provide guidance to select projects/initiatives; Serves as Office of Communications liaison to Provost’s Office/Vice President of Academic Affairs; Facilitates public records requests; Assists with the development and implementation of communications messages in response to issues or crisis management; Participates in crisis management training; Signs up for position relevant trade publication and reports salient points in staff meetings; Leads at least three (3) team projects quarterly; Participates in at least two (2) media or communication associations either: local, regional or national; and performs other related work duties and responsibilities as directed by supervisor.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and four (4) years of related experience; or Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two (2) years of related experience.
